Observações

The Bronx is essentially a Martini with orange juice added. It was ranked number three in "The World's 10 Most Famous Cocktails in 1934" behind the Martini (#1) and the Manhattan (#2). In the movie "The Thin Man" 1934, the lead actor (William Powell) compared the methods for shaking the Manhattan, Bronx, and Martini.

Bill W., the founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, said that his first drink of alcohol that he could remember was the "Bronx cocktail", given to him by a "socialite" at a party during World War I. This was the beginning of his addiction to alcohol.

Two sources credit Joseph S. Sormani as the person responsible for the drink.

The Bronx Cocktail, strange to say, was invented in Philadelphia, of all places! There it might have remained in obscurity had it not been for one Joseph Sormani, a Bronx restaurateur, who discovered it in the Quaker City in 1905. The original recipe has been greatly distorted in the course of years, but here is the original to guide you and to compare with the other recipes being used: Four parts of gin, one part of orange juice and one part of Italian Vermouth. Shake thoroughly in ice and serve.

Sormani was credited with creating the drink in his New York Times obituary:

Joseph S. Sormani, retired Bronx restaurateur, who was said to have originated the Bronx cocktail, died Wednesday night in his home, 2322 Fish Avenue, the Bronx, after a brief illness. His age was 83.

Sobre os ingredientes

Gim: Gim é uma bebida destilada à base de cereais. Posteriormente passa por um processo de infusão com zimbro e outras especiarias. Tem teor alcoólico entre 37,5% e 50%, dependendo da marca (teor semelhante a outras aguardentes como vodca, uísque ou cachaça). O gim é conhecido por ser um aguardente aromático. Cada marca se destaca por sua combinação única de ingredientes, dos quais as bagas de zimbro (ginebro) são obrigatórios, por lei. Outros ingredientes podem ser utilizados por cada marca para obter características próprias. Entre os ingredientes mais usados, além do zimbro, estão a canela, cascas de frutas cítricas, sementes de coentro, pimenta-da-jamaica, raiz de alcaçuz, pimenta-do-reino, cássia, farinha de amêndoa e outros.
